Howth, Co. Dublin

Refurbishment of a protected structure

Extensions, alterations and refurbishment of a fine detached house overlooking the sea on the south side of Howth Head. The original house dated from the early 19th Century, and was associated with the Jameson Family. Over the years the house had developed accretions, and had lost its clarity and order. The brief was to refurbish the house to modern standards using best conservation techniques, while retaining the comfortable ambience of this substantial country house. Works included the removal of several internal walls and chimney breasts to reform simple circulation routes, repairs to staircases and reinstatement of ornate plasterwork as well as a complete overhaul of the entire building envelope.
